Salem City Set to Kick Off New Season

With the 2025-26 campaign kicking off in a couple of weeks, this will be a clean slate not only on the record sheet, but within the club as well. While City had a successful regular season, finishing first in the South Atlantic Division with an overall record of 8-1-3, the teams season was ultimately cut short in the first round of playoffs after suffering a 4-0 loss to Lionsbridge.

For almost every sports team, the ultimate goal is to win  as many games as possible, but this squad differs from most teams that these players have played for up until now. This group consists of a plethora of players from many different soccer backgrounds, which  makes team chemistry an essential piece to the team’s success this summer. While all of them play or played at the collegiate level, for many of them this will be the first time they have played together. Some of them come from different countries such as France, Brazil, Germany, and Canada, just to name a few.

“I think that from minute one for us that the team chemistry element is going to be so important, probably as important as anything else. We’re having players come from all different places so it is very important that we get everyone firing off the same hymn sheet, the closer we can be as a group I believe it will stand us at the best chance of success on and off the  pitch,” head coach William Lennie said.

On a team that is already going to face some challenges, the biggest one comes into play when accounting for the fact that the club only has six returning players. Those returners will be a key component in helping the staff preach team culture and helping make sure everything runs smoothly. For everyone else, they will be having to learn a whole new system as they go. This adjustment phase can be a rough period of time for these guys as they have gotten used to their collegiate training plan and schedule. This is when the returners become a key piece of the team and are willing to lend their fellow teammates a helping hand when necessary.

“That core group of players that are coming back, all six of them are gonna be instrumental in continuing to build the amazing culture that we have here,” Lennie said.

With so much individual talent on this roster, the staff faces the challenge of managing each player’s time and finding the right combinations to put on the pitch. Every player has shown they are capable of playing at  a high level, which means they might not play as much as they are used to. As a result, balancing it all and keeping the team engaged will be a huge factor in the team’s success.

“It’s figuring out how we can use all of  these individuals and their best traits to manipulate the way we want to play in order to win,” Lennie said.

Salem City will kick off their season with a trip to Ting Park in Holly Springs, North Carolina for a date with Wake FC on Wednesday, May 20 at 7 PM.
